"Analysing the requirements of new IACS classification rules for fatigue strength of bulk carrier and oil tanker hulls".

Bulk carriers and tankers are among the most popular types of ships. The biggest reach 250 thousand tons and exceed 300 meters. Their hulls are built according to technical standards formulated in classification society rules.

The high casualty rate of bulk carrier sinkings in the nineties of the twentieth century and the threat to the natural marine environment related with operation of tankers forced the leading classification societies associated in the ’International  Association of Classification Societies’ (IACS) to decide on gradual unification and upgrading of structure and strength requirements of bulk carrier hull elements, which once damaged result in the ship sinking (e.g. [1], [2]).

The next step in unifying requirements involved the development of common rules [3] and [4]. These rules were developed for tankers and bulk carriers by independent expert teams. They differed significantly in terms of calculated loads, strength analysis (MES), etc. Consequently, IACS decided to unify rule requirements for both ship types referred to in [3] and [4], drafting preliminary rules [5] to enter into force in 2015.

The rules [5] apply the same parametric formulas to both ship types identifying applicable loads (bending, external and internal pressure), use the same methods of calculating stress and the same criteria for strength, buckling and fatigue strength of hull structure.

Fatigue strength calculations involve approximating the long term distribution of stress ranges by Weibull distribution, applying Wöhler curves and Palmgren-Miner hypothesis. Weibull distribution uses a characteristic stress range value, based on loads calculated according to parametric formulas slightly differing from formulas used to assess the structure’s strength.

Fatigue strength of bottom longitudinals and inner bottom is calculated according to a simple beam model and a table giving stress concentration value for many typical structural solutions.

More complex structural details (e.g. longitudinal brackets toes,  connection of stool corrugated bulkheads with inner bottom, hatch coaming toes etc.) require calculating the range of hot spot stress applying FEM model for a significant fragment of the hull meshed  with applying plate finite elements. The length of the plate element side in the area vulnerable to fatigue cracks should be equal to plate thickness. The application of several complex procedures is required to determine hot spot stress values based on stresses in the finite elements. The calculation procedure is time consuming and complicated. Efficient calculation performance is only possible using sophisticated IT software packages.

The article presents the method used and calculation results obtained in PRS according to rules given in [5] for fatigue strength of several hull structure details for a panamax bulk carrier. In order to meet the criteria given in [5] the structure particulars of many details of the ship built under 2008 rules [3] required modification. In some cases the structure modification involved the use of very thick plates or unusual shapes of structure elements. There were even cases when rational structure details solutions, similar to those verified in operation, were simply impossible. This indicates that some of the proposed rule requirements [5] must be modified.

"Analiza wymagań nowych przepisów klasyfikacyjnych IACS dotyczących trwałości zmęczeniowej kadłubów masowców i tankowców"

Masowce i tankowce to jedne z najbardziej popularnych typów statków. Największe z nich osiągają nośność nawet 250 tysięcy ton i długość ponad 300 metrów.

W przepisach [5] stosowane są te same dla obu typów statków formuły parametryczne do wyznaczania obciążeń obliczeniowych (zginanie ogólne, ciśnienia zewnętrzne i wewnętrzne), te same metody obliczania naprężeń i identyczne kryteria dotyczące wytrzymałości doraźnej, stateczności i trwałości zmęczeniowej elementów konstrukcji kadłuba.

W artykule przedstawiono metodę i wyniki obliczeń trwałości zmęczeniowej kilku węzłów konstrukcji kadłuba masowca ‘panamax’, wykonanych w Polskim Rejestrze Statków (PRS) wg wymagań [5].
