New software developed by Polish Register of Shipping for preparing complex computation models employed to verify structure compliance with PRS Rules

 

 

The article describes the capacity of the NeptunGeo system, developed by the PRS Research & Development Division, to prepare computation models to analyse the conformity of a ship structure with PRS Rules. This software becomes an important part of a new computational environment developed internally in PRS.

The key functions and system assumptions are presented by outlining the two main modules: the managing module NeptunGeo and the collaborating CAD editor. By joining these two elements, the program authors built a very efficient CAD/CAE/FEA tool for creating complex parametric computation models. The application range of the system covers the initial process of preparing data for structural analyses, the typical FEM models themselves as well as assists in building the most demanding models and data to verify structures with Common Structural Rules (CSR).

Detailed solutions, developed by the software authors, are presented for editing 2D data and their conversion into spatial 3D elements.

The article also presents several features of the geometric process, idealisation and parametric features required to generate data for certain types of analysis, as well as the verification of partial results. Examples of parametric generation of FEM models include strength, fatigue, and buckling.

The conclusions indicate the wide application of the software in the editing module based on standards and solutions of AutoCAD™ products, which in this case, are not obsolete and provide an optimal construction platform also for state-of-the-art modelling techniques and open for exchange with modern CAD standards. The benefits of the adopted solution include the quick and efficient development of user operational skills and work on both modern formats of technical documentation and also the less advanced, but quite widely spread scanned (raster) documentation.
