Directive application
The Directive 96/98/EC applies to marine equipment defined in Annexes A.1 and A.2, to be placed onboard the new and existing convention ships registered under the flag of European Union member states, whether the equipment is placed for the first time or is replaced with the new one.
The conformity assessment procedures specified in the Directive cover the marine equipment given in Annex A.1, for which international testing standards exist, grouped as follows:
life-saving appliances,
marine pollution prevention,
fire protection,
navigation equipment,
radiocommunication equipment,
equipment required under COLREG 72.
Marine equipment specified in Annex A.2, for which no detailed testing standards exist, will be subject to conformity assessment procedures defined in the Directive after developing and entering into force appropriate standards and after publishing next Directive on marine equipment amending the Directive 96/98/EC so that particular items of marine equipment given in Annex A.2 are transferred to Annex A.1.
Annex A.2 contains the following equipment:
life-saving appliances,
marine pollution prevention,
fire protection,
navigation equipment,
radiocommunication equipment,
equipment required under COLREG 72,
bulk carrier safety equipment.
