Assurance of safety at sea and protection of the marine environment
requires the cooperation of several maritime players; maritime administration,
classification society, underwriters, shipowner and crew. On December 12, a
meeting gathering representatives of the Polish shipping business was held in the Szczecin hotel Novotel.
The intention of the event, the first arranged by Polish Register of Shipping, was to develop further cooperation and enhance safety at sea through better integration of
maritime players
A
special role in assuring the safety objective is assigned to the shipowner and
crew who face the safety issue directly.
The meeting provided an opportunity
to grant an award to a Polish shipowner who stands out in the drive to ensure
safe shipping and protection of the environment.
The 2008 Neptun Award was
conferred by Polish Register of Shipping on POLSTEAM also in recognition of the
good and long-term mutual cooperation.
The most important contact point
between PRS and the owner is the ship, where PRS surveyor, ship supervisor and
crew meet during the vessel’s survey. This is the place where decisions,
relating to repair and maintenance works, are made that guarantee conformity
with safety standards.
Problems
more difficult to solve are encountered in case of technical failures,
collisions or grounding. Decisions made by PRS must also be obvious for the
owner who accepting to bear additional costs acknowledges the inestimable value
of safety
Wishing
to reward the owners most dedicated to care for safety of life and protection of
the natural environment with which the Society cooperates, Polish Register of
Shipping has founded the “NEPTUN” Award. The bronze figure is a replica of the
Neptune figure which crowns a renown Gdañsk fountain and is part of PRS logo.
Polish
shipowners proceed in-line with good marine practice, showing care for safety
and environmental protection and we enjoy good mutual cooperation. The first
owner singled out by PRS is POLSTEAM Co.
The award is granted in recognition
of POLSTEAM’s consistency in maintaining the fleet in good technical condition
and in effect a good PSC record as there are no grounds for detentions, as well as in recognition of PRS and
POLSTEAM excellent cooperation particularly in critical moments of ship
operations.
The
favourable atmosphere of the meeting gathering over 15 companies involved in the
Polish marine business provided an opportunity for business and non-business
talk. We hope that our partners enjoyed the event and are willing to participate
in such events in oncoming years.
