For
many years now, PRS has been carrying out, for a token fee, classification
survey of the famous frigate Dar Pomorza. “The White Frigate” has been
inseparably associated with Gdynia for 70 years – she was built in 1909
and became the
training ship of the Maritime Academy in 1930. The frigate has won Operation
Sail twice; she won the Cutty Sark Trophy in 1980 and stayed in the lead during
regattas held in 1974, 1976 and 1978. Now, afloat by Nabrzeże Pomorskie in the
port of Gdynia, the frigate serves as a museum.
In December 2008, another historic
vessel came under PRS technical supervision. The 25m long gaff rigged
wooden ketch General Zaruski, intended for 30 persons, was meant to be
the first of 10 sister vessels, on board of which the Maritime and Colonial
League planned to carry out a large scale programme of maritime education of the
Polish youth. In 1940’s, following the dissolution of the Maritime League, the
yacht was taken over by the Friends of Soldiers League (Liga Przyjaciół
Żołnierza) which was later on transformed into the League of State Defence.
During the Stalin regime, the yacht bore the name Młoda Gwardia.
The City of Gdansk bought
the ketch in December this year. After thorough renovation works, the ketch will
both promote the City and serve as a training yacht for young people.
On December 11, in the Municipal Centre of Sport and
Recreation (MOSiR), Captain Jan Ludwig, Manager of Yachts and Boats Department
in PRS, handed the PRS document to Leszek Paszkowski, the Director of MOSiR,
informing about the PRS decision of free classification supervision of the
yacht General Zaruski.
PRS will supervise the
revitalization of General Zaruski both in terms of technical
documentation approval and the direct supervision in the
shipyard.
After the reinstatement of class, this sailing yacht
will be the longest PRS classified vessel of this kind. |
